Plot: Both his subjects and the ailing emperor Marcus Aurelius admired the formidable Roman general Maximus Meridius. Maximus was chosen by the emperor to succeed him before his death, and due to a power struggle, he and his family were executed. The strong general's lack of will caused him to be caught and forced into gladiatorial combat till his death, and he was powerless to save his family. His sole motivation at this point was the opportunity to go to the top and meet the person who would exact his retribution by looking into his eyes.
